Interpersonal Violence and Older Women

$195,000 grant from Attorney General, Betty Montgomery
The Women's Health Program designed this interdisciplinary project with faculty from  UC Family Medicine, UC Criminal Justice and staff of Women Helping Women.

The study is designed to improve identification and intervention by the medical community to women over 60 years who are victims of domestic violence.

Domestic Violence affects 25% of women during their lifetime. The needs of older women who are victims of domestic violence are unique from those of younger women. Older women often have medical and mental health issues that make them seek care from physicians. Participating in long marriages that they do not want to leave; women just want the abuse to end, their family life to remain intact and to feel safe at home for their remaining years. The usual programming for younger victims such as support groups is not always acceptable to older women.; Shelters are usually filled with children and may not be set up to manage the needs of older women, such as handicap access, medication protocols, and accomodating special dietary needs. Often victims may not drive and are hence dependent on the abuser for transportation.

Principle Investigators are Barbara Rinto, Women's Health Program, Therese Zink, Family Medicine and Bonnie Fisher, Criminal Justice.
