University of Cincinnati Faculty Recognition

YOLANDA SANCHEZ, PHD, Assistant Professor of Molecular Genetics has been named one of the PEW SCHOLARS in biomedical research for 2001. Congratulations to Dr. Sanchez!

The Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program for Women is the only in-depth national program that focuses on preparing women faculty at academic health centers for senior leadership positions. The Program is sponsored by the Institute for Women's Health at MCP Hahnemann University. Applicants must have the support of their dean and Dr. John Hutton has supported this program both financially and with his presence. DRS. SANDRA DEGEN, PAULA HILLARD  LAURA WEXLER, and LORI STARK have attended this program. Dr. UMA KOTAGAL will attend this fall. Dr. Kotagal is Professor of Pediatrics and Director of Health Policy and Clinical Effectiveness at Children's Hospital Medical Center.

SUE HEFFELFINGER, MD, PHD and ROSA SERRA, PHD were invited to attend the Second Conference on Sex and Gene Expression (SAGE II) in March 2001. SANDRA DEGEN, PHD and MICHELLE BARTON, PHD attended in 2000. The Society for Women's Health Research (SWHR)launched this new initiative in the field of gender-based biology in 2000 with the first of a series of conferences on the Biology of Sex and Gender Differences.  This conference was by invitation only with expenses paid by SWHR. DR. GABRIEL M. DE COURTEN-MYERS' research has been recognized by the Society for Women's Health Research at the 1999 Ninth Annual Scientific Advisory Meeting, Annual Update on Women's Health Research held October 25, 1999 in Washington, DC. See her research statement which appears on the Society's web site in the meeting's research summary under "University Based Research" "University of Cincinnati." SAM IX Summary

Dr. de Courten-Myers has also presented an abstract, "Links Between Risk of Dementia, Cerebral Morphology and Gender," in Switzerland. The abstract was published in Alzheimers Reports 3(suppl 1):S42, 2000.

The winner of the 1999 Jacobs Institute of Women's Health - Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical Scholar Award is Elizabeth Goodman, MD of Children's Hospital. She is using the $30,000 award to examine the association between depression, socioeconomic status, and use of mental health and medical services among adolescent girls. Congratulations, Dr. Goodman!
